I ran across Triffids today and thought to myself, what the heck is a Triffid? Being a curious sort, I did a little research and found out about The Triffids and the triffid. Two completely different things, but related in a way. I must admit, the whole thing is kind of strange.

Lets start with a triffid. A triffid is a fictional plant that has the ability to uproot itself and walk around on it’s base of three roots. They are very agile and can climb stairs, but are not able to use their roots to hold tools. The dangerous part of a triffid is it’s head, or what would be its head. Inside the brightly colored flower is a stinger with venomous poison. The triffid poison works almost instantly, even on large animals and humans.

The trifid first appeared in the John Wyndham book, The Day of the Triffids, which was later made into a movie and a BBC television show. The appeared again in the Simon Clark novel, The Night of the Triffids. There is speculation that Wyndham got the name from the Trifid Nebula.

What about The Triffids? Believe it or not, The Triffids were an Australian Rock Band, that are about to be inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame. They are best known for their hit “Bury Me Deep in Love”

They started out in Perth in the late 1970’s, and took there name from the book, The Night of the Triffids. The Triffids were a fairly successful group in the 1980’s before breaking up in 1989. The leader, David McComb, died in 1999 from the combined effects of his heroin use, an auto accident, and the partial rejection of a heart transplant.

In 2006, their record company started reissuing their records and have continued to do so. ARIA announced earlier this month that on July 1, 2008 The Triffids would be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

So there you have it, strange as it is. A fictional killer flower, named after a nebula, that spawned an Australian rock band that will be in the hall of fame next month. So what do you think? Do The Triffids belong in the ARIA hall of fame, and does the triffid belong in The Little Shoppe of Horrors?

I had the privilege of knowing, and at one stage working with, David McComb, lead singer and songwriter of the Triffids. He was one of the truly great songwriters and the ARIA Hall of Fame thing is a thoroughly well-deserved tribute to his awe-inspiring talent. If you’ve never heard his songs, I’d earnestly recommend the following three Triffids albums: Treeless Plain, Born Sandy Devotional and Calenture (my personal favourite). Dave also wrote most of the songs for the Blackeyed Susans album All Souls Alive, which is pretty much in the same league. Some of his songs rank among the best ever written. It would repay anybody’s time to search them out.
