How would you like the longest day of the year to last for two weeks? Be a great way to spend a vacation having the longest day of the year be the two weeks of your vacation wouldn’t it? Well if that’s what you want, you need to move to that tropical known as Guam. I was just reading a newspaper article that says that just like when you get up North in Alaska and Northern Canada the sun never sets in the summer and never rises in the winter, it’s the same way in Guam. Something to do with being near the equator. Anyway, the author says that the longest day of year on Guam is 12 hours and 55 minutes. Unlike here in the United States though, the day after isn’t 12 hours and 54 minutes. Starting today and running for the next 12 days, the days will all be 12 hours and 55 minutes. Wouldn’t that be cool? Two weeks of having the longest day of the year. The author said it’s not really that big a deal though. Seems that because of the location of Guam, and the fact that the earth doesn’t tilt that much there, therefore the length of the day doesn’t change that much, If you live in the Northern United States you know that in the winter the sun may rise around 8:00 am and it will be dark outside by 5:00 pm. In Guam, you’ll have about 11 hours of sunshine in the winter and 13 hours in the summer. That’s a lot different than 9 hours in winter and 17 in the summer. I guess that means that having the longest day of the year isn’t that big a deal in Guam. Here in the US, you can tell that the longest day of the year is a really big deal, because I’m writing about it.
