Playing like the Boston Celtics of my youth, the boys from Beantown humiliated the Los Angeles Lakers in game 6 of the NBA Championship. Blowing out the Laker 131 to 92, the Boston Celtics took the trophy home for the 17th time in team history.

In winning by 39 points, the Celtics went into the record books for the largest margin of victory in a championship clinching game. The previous record? The 1965 championship when the Celtics, led by Bill Russell, beat the Lakers by 33 points, 129-96.

Red Auerbach, the great Boston Celtic coach who died in 2006 would have loved this game. It gave Boston it’s first title since his passing. The only thing missing was Red’s signature victory cigar. Wyc Grousbeck, the Celtics owner, put an unlit cigar in his mouth - a tribute to Red, the patriarch who had a hand in the franchise’s first 16 titles.

There was some satisfaction for Auerbachs memory as the Boston Celtics prevented Lakers coach Phil Jackson from passing Red with a 10th Championship.

The Boston Celtics are the 2008 NBA Champions. Let the party begin.
